Annual Rotary Cancer Run held in Bujumbura
Uganda's Embassy in Burundi, Rotary clubs in Burundi, the Centre Medico Chirurgical de Kinindo (CMCK), Uganda's diaspora in Burundi, and the diplomatic corps accredited to Burundi jointly participated in the 12th edition of Annual Rotary Cancer Run on Sunday 27th August 2023
The event began with a lively warmup session and some brief remarks. Mr. Wafula James Bichachi, Counselor at the Uganda Embassy, began by recognizing the presence of all runners, the Uganda Community in Burundi, the CMCK Cancer Hospital fraternity members, and members of the diplomatic corps including the World Bank. He noted that in Uganda and Burundi, Cancer is a growing health challenge and that in Uganda, in 2022, more than 22,000 people succumbed to the disease. He reminded participants that the Cancer Centre in CMCK needs a lot of support, and urged those present to reach out to the Centre by donating.
Aggrippine Nyandwi, a breast cancer survivor and Head of Cancer Survivors’ Association spoke of the critical importance of early detection.
The Ugandan business community was represented by Plascon, Uganda Airlines, World Bank, Steel and Tube, Alliance, and Rene Pharmacy. Movit offered prizes to the fastest 3 runners, the fastest lady, and fastest children.
The Cancer Run in Uganda is sponsored by Rotary Clubs, Centenary Bank, Parliament of Uganda, Krystal Water, New Vision and many other Government and private sector partners. This year, the proceeds from Cancer Run in Bujumbura, will be donated to the Cancer Centres in Uganda (Nsambya Hospital) and Burundi (CMCK Hospital).
