Uganda Embassy hosts Cancer Run 2024

Sat, 08/24/2024

The Embassy of Uganda in Burundi today successfully hosted the 3rd edition of the Burundi Rotary Cancer run 2024, in solidarity with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Uganda which has organized the 13th edition of the Annual Rotary Cancer Run in Uganda, slated for tomorrow Sunday 25th August 2024.

The Chargé d'affaires at the Embassy thanked all that participated and expressed hope that in collaboration with other partners and contributors, a significant contribution will be made in the fight against cancer. This cancer run will help raise funds for cancer screening, treatment and early diagnosis of the disease.

Part of the proceeds this year will make a significant contribution to Centre Medico Chirurgical de Kinindo (CMCK) Hospital in their treatment of cancer patients in Burundi. Cancer survivors took the platform to share their moving testimonies with the participants.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the world and one in eight women are projected to face it in their lifetime. Over 10 million people globally are living with or have experienced a diagnosis of a certain form of cancer. Lately, however, the survival rates have greatly improved through initiatives such as this cancer run. More than 80 percent of people who develop cancer will now live beyond five years. This is in contrast with 40 years ago, where it was only around 50 percent.

A moment of silence was observed in respect and recognition of those that have lost the battle against cancer and in solidarity with those under treatment. Trophies were awarded to the 1st place finisher in the male and female category. Medals too were awarded to the runners up in both categories.

Participants were thereafter treated to breakfast to replenish their energy, and children were occupied in fun activities, like a bouncing castle and trampoline.
