EAC partner states start talks on uniform call rates

Plans to harmonise communication rates in the East African region have taken shape.


The first technical committee meeting for ICT cluster of Northern Corridor integration projects comprising of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Sudan sat in Kampala yesterday and agreed to have both mobile communication, and broadband charges cut and unified.


Kenya’s Communications Commission director of licensing compliance, Christopher Reemey, the Uganda Communication Commission executive director, Godfrey Mutabazi and Rwanda’s Utility Communication Commissioner, Christopher Kemen represented their countries at the meeting.


Issues on the agenda include developing a framework and roadmap towards reduction and elimination of in–region roaming charges, harmonisation of international termination rates and developing a framework towards elimination of international traffics surcharges, among others. All these were adopted.


The chair of the meeting, Eng Mutabazi, said it was agreed that ICT be given prominence like other infrastructure.
